If you are coming from Milan or Rome the best option you’ll have to reach Florence will be by train.  Luckily, despite few strikes, trains in Italy are fast, efficient and somewhat not too expensive.

Santa Maria Novella trains
Florence Station of Santa Maria Novella

There are three main stations in Florence: Firenze Santa Maria Novella, Firenze Campo di Marte and Firenze Rifredi. The SMN station is the central station and is located 4 minutes away from the city’s Cathedral.

The national train’s website is www.trenitalia.com

Just outside the station there is an abundant number of taxis. In any case the center is a 4 minute walk, taking the via Panzani street. There are even local buses that take you where a ticket costs just 1 euro 20 cents. Now only the number 22 and 6 go in the center.

At the train station there is a pharmacy in case of any urgent need of medicines before traveling during the day.
