If you have ever been to Florence you know this is a town where “suburbs” takes on a very special meaning. Just outside the very hectic circonvallazioni, the main arteries that lead into and out of the city center, are a host of picturesque residential areas where the aristocratic and wealthy built their spacious villas in the shade of huge umbrella pines.
Cypress trees line the narrow roads that wind upwards past olive groves and tiny vineyards, so that almost at once you forget about the noisy city you just left behind. But it’s there, visible from every curve and terrace, dominated by Brunelleschi’s inexplicable cupola and the forboding tower of Palazzo Vecchio.
What a perfect combination, to have the sights of the Renaissance city but not the smells, sounds and mayhem of 21st century Firenze!
This 17th century villa occupies a hillside on the old road to Bologna, just fifteen minutes north of the city center. It has its own 4500 square foot garden, with a swimming pool that occupies one of the natural terraces where lemon trees used to be cultivated in a great earthenware vases.
Guests enter the villa through a gracious courtyard onto the foyer entrance. On the main floor there is a large living room with fireplace, a spacious sitting room and formal dining room.
These rooms have stunning casement ceilings. A lovely sunroom with French doors opening out to the exquisite garden and terraces. Furnishings include family antiques, comfortable overstuffed sofas and chairs. The kitchen is completely equipped with dishwasher, refrigerator, freezer, microwave, gas stove and
American coffeemaker.
It has a table for two, and opens onto a covered pergola with dining for the entire group. There is also a
a cottage with a washing machine, dryer, iron and board, and a small WC.
Upstairs there are four bedrooms on the second floor. The spacious master bedroom has a double bed ( it is possible to add two single beds in this room) and a magnificent private balcony with splendid views of the city.
Next door is a bathroom with shower and tub.The next two bedrooms share a balcony: one has two twin beds, the second has a full sized bed and a single bed. Then there is a suite with its own entrance, featuring a double bedroom, small kitchen and bathroom with shower.
Another flight of stairs leads up to the last bedroom, which has a double bed and a bathroom with a stall shower.
But the villa has more to offer! On the roof, reached by a comfortable flight of stairs, is a large terrace with deck chairs and one of the best views to be found for miles.
All the windows in the house have screens, the property is gated and surrounded by a wall, and in the garden is a built-in brick barbeque.
Pool: In the garden beside the villa there is a pool approximately 8x4 meters with a full size deck for tanning.

The house is very spacious with plenty of room for a group of ten people: you can party together and enjoy your own time of privacy. In consideration of the terrific views from the terraces, my favorite part was having afternoon tea on the terrace on a sunny Christmas day.

Staying in your villa was delightful! We were 10 people from the Netherlands. One family, and we tried to go out to a restaurant in the night time... but having dinner in the garden with this view, it could never be that beautiful anywhere, so we had dinner here every night and enjoyed the lovely place! Maybe till next time?

Oh what a wonderful week we have enjoyed! The villa has been a dream-come-true. Driving in Florence (Firenze) is exciting, but after a few days becomes easier and more fun. We loved the city center, but even more the countryside. A drive through Chianti was magical.
Dining for lunch with Riccardo and Fiammetta Croci at their home was beyond anything we anticipated. Fiammetta is a wonderful cook and the 13th century home is truly beautiful. This was the Italy we immagined before our trip.
We found a wonderful wine shop in town on Corso dei Tintori. Roberto and Antonella told us all about Itallian wines and allowed us to taste wine, cheese, biscotta, bread and other wonrous food. Find them just off the Piazza di Santa Croce.
Thanks to Riccardo, Fiammetta and Alessandro for the best vacation of our lives
