The 24th of June is celebrates the anniversary of the birth of San Giovanni Battista, commonly known as John the BaptistChristians have long interpreted the life of John the Baptist as a preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ. According to Saint Luke, John was related to Jesus Christ since his mother, Elizabeth was Mother Mary’s cousin. Not going too far in detail, according to the Hebrew Gospel, John baptized Jesus and is known to be as his precursor.

San Giovanni Battista

Florence greets this day with a variety of events. Candle offerings followed by a formal celebration dedicated to John the Baptist in the Cathedral,  procession and finals of  the “Calcio Storico Fiorentino” at Santa Croce (see article on “Travel to Florence: 10 reasons why“) and a final sprint of the day rich with fireworks & music.

Last year there was a possibility to organize a picnic  and watch the fireworks on the banks of the Arno river. Included in the offer was a basket of items to eat and drink as well as a sheet to spread on the ground for a total of 15euros. A lovely idea that as last year, will be followed by number of people. The baskets are limited and as you know. ” The early bird catches the worm” 😀 Since I am not sure of whether the picnic packet will be organized this year, ill just post you the page where one can contact the staff directly.

The Fireworks will last for about an hour and will take place at Piazzale Michelangelo. Do inform yourselves for the traffic circulation since due to this event roads will be blocked in this area. On the eve of the fireworks, Piazza Signoria and Ponte Vecchio will be a pleasant spot to be since many musicians will be present in the square. The music is more than just okay and the river Arno is a few meters away, perfect for viewing the never ending fireworks accompanying you deep into the night.

Special thanks for pic
