There might be occasions where the flat you are staying in has no internet connection and the property owner is not opting for one either. It can be bugging at times since you would like to cuddle-up under your blankets with a nice warm coffee and maybe chat with your friends from home. If this is one of your cases, don’t despair! Florence has a huge library known as The National Library near Santa Croce that offers free internet until evening.
The exact location is Piazza dei Cavalleggeri number 1. All you need to do, is become a member, which is free of cost. There are other libraries around Florence that do have internet as well but the National library is the best option since it is huge and has more PCs’ available. The Italian Universities do offer free internet as well until closing hours that should be at 18:00 to 19:00. Not all the uni campuses are accessible to those students not part of the faculty where the campus is situated as there is a special card to enter the buildings. However there are study areas that have Wi-Fi and all you need is someone who could give you their password. 🙂 In this way one can even mix up with the Italian uni crowd and through them, get to know a lot of happening events during the week.
In case of emergencies in the later hours even until 11p.m, Florence is filled with internet cafes and some are really cheap. 1 euro for an hour is not too difficult to find.
The last and the maybe the best option is the free WI-FI Internet finally available in quit a few bars around the city centre! Of course if you do not mind spending a little more money, you have the USB internet connection as well. There are many good offers along with your mobile operators like Wind, Tim and Vodafone to get a monthly charge for certain amount of usage. If you opt for one of these just be careful of the terms and conditions. Just to be on the safer side, make it a point to clarify whether there would be any charges if one wishes to terminate the service.
In case you are opting to get a home connection I would advice you a wind connection since I have it myself. Unless the house already have sky or fastweb do not get these connections since it can get complicated. This is more convenient fot those who stay permanently in the residence. In any case offers from Wind is simple and can be terminated without complications. The minimum one month advance cancellation is more than enough. Before making such an option ask help from someone who does know Italian since on contacting the personnel and to clear all doubts on the offer it is a must to understand Italian. It would be quite amazing to find that there is someone who can explain everything to you in English. So please go for this option if you know Italian or if someone could help you out with it.
