The Baptistery of Saint Giovanni is one of the best example of the Romanico Fiorentino style characterized by the poly-chromatic decoration of the external surface.Inside the building the walls are covered by marble inlays and of reach mosaic works made in the thirteenth century.
The Baptistery has three entrances which doors are decorated with nouns of bronze that reproduces biblical scenes from the Old and the New Testament and the life of Saint Giovanni Baptist.The famous competition of 1401, that is considered the starting date of the Renaissance period, concerned just the decoration of one of these doors, located on the East, named also Door of Eden which nouns were realized by Lorenzo Ghiberti ,the winner of the competition.
