The are of the Oltrarno comprehends the districts of Santo Spirito and San Frediano. It’s named Oltrarno from the combination of Oltre L’Arno which means beyond the Arno river, this was the way Florentines used to call the area beyond the river from the Duomo,  you might also hear Di là D’Arno.

It’s probably the most characteristic areas of Florence, once upon a time the area was for the workforce of ancient Florence, small houses, not very tall buildings homed the daily workers crossing the bridge for the every days work in construction, work of arts and all kinds of production in central Florence.
